It is normal among parents to dream to be the best version of themselves for the sake of their children. But due to the fact that every person, every family and every household is unique from each, there’s no one-method fits all solution to making this happen. On the other hand, if you are really seeking to become a better parent for your children, there are guidelines that you can use.
Tip number 1. Enforcing limits, rules and structure – as per experts, it showed that children are feeling more secure and safer as well whenever there are structure and rules that are implemented in the household. Not only that, this is a great way of promoting self-control as well as self-reliance among your children. For this reason, you must not be afraid on implementing reasonable limits and rules in your house.
Tip number 2. Have consistency – after setting the rules and limits that you have just established, one thing that you should do is to stick with it. Whenever possible, never change or bend these rules depending on your mood, weather, occasion and whatnot. To be able to avoid confusion, there be consistency in the rules that you have prepared. Practicing what you have said and preventing saying one thing and doing the other is never a good idea.
Tip number 3. Show respect to your kid – children learn from you and if you’re treating them with respect, then don’t be surprised if they treat others with high level of respect as well. It can go a long way if you would treat children as adult and avoid comparing them with others even with siblings.
Tip number 4. It is okay to fail – it is completely normal that your children will encounter failure in life every once in a while. You must learn how to give your children their sense of freedom and experience failure as it’s part of growing up. Overprotection does no good on your children as it would only make them become timid or fearful. Just because of the reason that you don’t want your children to get hurt or to fail, which is why you curb their natural instincts and desire to learn is being irresponsible on your part.
Your role as a parent is to provide assurance that they’re in a safe environment.
If you wish to become a better parent, then following these guidelines can be a good start. On the other hand, just to set your expectations, your children will not automatically become successful in life simply by following these guidelines. However, this can give you satisfaction that you’ve fulfilled your roles and responsibilities as a parent.
